Europlátano, one of the six organisations that make up “Plátano de Canarias,” is celebrating its 30th anniversary and in the best way possible, accompanied by everyone that makes possible the future of Canary Island bananas. It is, of course, centred on restarting fruit-growing activities in the island of La Palma after the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, which began on September 19, 2021.
Three decades of commitment to the quality of Canary Island bananas
The history of Europlátano goes back to 1992. In the matchless natural setting of the Canary Islands, with a crop that is cultivated on volcanic land, featuring a privileged climate and employing traditional growing methods; with a unique product, but one which was under threat due to the liberalisation of markets and the entry of direct competitors of the banana in Europe, committing ourselves to quality as a way of standing out.
The beginning of the company is rooted in the Aridane Valley, where 43 fruit growers founded Europlátano. With a common goal based on commitment and work, they managed to produce fruit that satisfies all the requirements of quality and trust for consumers, values that remain intact after more than three decades.
In order to overcome the product’s seasonal nature and increase production to satisfy growing demand on the part of its clients, Europlátano took a step forward and extended towards Tenerife, due to the conviction of the island’s fruit growers, who firmly believed in the company’s philosophy.
Sustainable agriculture
The company’s values were passed on to the Gabaceras brand regarding which, in addition to satisfying all the necessary requirements so that the fruit meets the expectations of the most demanding customers, Europlátano’s production systems respect the grower and the environment, promoting sustainable agriculture as one of the main pillars of the company’s philosophy.
Proof of this is quality certification such as Global GAP or GRASP, which indicate that the product has a unique taste, is healthy and produced nationally using artisanal methods.
Throughout this time, Europlátano has managed to uphold its standards of quality and, for the eighth year in a row, “Plátano Gabaceras,” the company’s premium product, has been named the Taste of the Year, in this case for 2022.
