The absence of economic incentives and instability in the sector make it difficult for new generations to enter the agricultural industry. “In this context, prioritizing Spanish products is essential. In Spain, national potatoes are available from March to December, and with second plantings, from December to March, covering an extensive period during which consumers can choose a high-quality, fresh, and locally sourced product,” explains Javier Amutio, director of Grupo Amutio. The Álava-based company, specialized in potato production, is an example of how the sector continues to evolve and seek new opportunities.
With operations in various regions across Spain, the company maintains a strong commitment to potato production in Campo de Cartagena, where this year, it has kept its cultivation area at slightly over 1,000 hectares. The recent rainfall has benefited the early potato campaign in the region, ensuring a high-quality yield. Meanwhile, in Castilla y León, Javier Amutio focuses on potato production for the processing industry, consolidating his position in this segment.
However, not all crops have had the same favorable conditions. Verdete potatoes, which have gained popularity in recent years, have faced a challenging season. Despite good market prices, yields have been low, affecting profitability for producers.

“The combination of climatic factors and the agronomic challenges of this second harvest have caused the decline,” Amutio explains. Beyond business, Amutio demonstrates a strong commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Through joint collaboration with the Aztivate Foundation in Kenya, the company has contributed to the creation of a school that provides education and food to children in the Turkana region.
Additionally, Grupo Amutio supports initiatives such as the Liga Genuine, dedicated to children with disabilities, and actively participates in charity events within its community. Grupo Amutio continues to expand, particularly in the washed and processing potato segment, strengthening its commitment to domestic production. In an increasingly globalized market, the company emphasizes the importance of consuming local and seasonal products, securing the future of Spanish agriculture and supporting those who cultivate the land every day.
