One year after their commercial launch, Harmoniz’s new California pepper varieties are gaining strong acceptance among late-cycle growers. Bernabel (red) and Bonáyar (yellow) have been designed to deliver high yields and quality in plantations from July 25 onwards.
According to José Martínez, Product Developer at Harmoniz, both varieties stand out for their exceptional color and shine, as well as remarkable consistency both on the plant and post-harvest. “We set ourselves apart from other market varieties by offering high yields with outstanding quality,” he states.
Bernabel is distinguished by its larger size and stable G-GG fruit calibers. Bonáyar maintains a bright lemon-yellow color, without the tendency to turn orange when exposed to sunlight, a highly valued trait in the market. Both varieties exhibit outstanding resistance to powdery mildew, L4, and spotted virus, with no microcracking issues.
Designed for Productivity and Resistance
The development of these varieties addresses the growing demand for productive and resilient materials.
Vigorous plants with short internodes ensure consistent production while maintaining fruit size and shape until the end of the cycle. Their small leaves aid in controlling Thrips parvispinus, an increasingly significant pest. Harmoniz continues to invest in innovation.

For the next campaign, the company plans to introduce new California varieties for all cycles, incorporating nematode resistance. At the same time, its specialty breeding program continues to advance, with the first innovations expected to be unveiled in the coming years. As part of its commercial strategy, Harmoniz is hosting open-field days in San Agustín (El Ejido), allowing growers to experience these varieties firsthand. “The reception has been incredible. Farmers want to try them, and we have already recorded the first seed reservations,” concludes Martínez.
