Procomel is expanding its family

The new variety promises to make a name for itself

“We have been immersed in obtaining a different type of melon for the past two years, but the project has not been completely finished yet and we cannot launch it for mass production yet. This will take place in 2025. It will be a melon variant both externally and internally and it will have a different, very pleasant flavour. We have needed two years, along with this year to shape both production and marketing. The melon has undergone the hybrid process here, but it comes from abroad,” Celedonia Buendía, manager of the company, explains.

At this point of the season, the company is in the middle of the Brazilian melon import period. It has production agreements with three companies with which it has been working for many years. However, 65% of its production is Spanish, with sources as diverse as Almeria, Murcia or Castilla La Mancha.

Buendía explains that sector’s main, transversal concern is the uncertainty about water. “We need guarantees that there will be water over the next few years. The political use that is being made of this matter is seriously hurting us, and I am afraid that the political parties are using it as a weapon and, therefore, they don’t really want to find a solution to the problem.”
