Production in this area is characterized by a high degree of specialization in apple growing, which has been developed over the last few decades and today covers 2,000 hectares.

This development is undoubtedly linked to the creation of its collective brand in 1983 and its subsequent European registration in 2003 as ‘PGI Poma de Girona,’ under which its production is protected. In addition, the Catalan regulation was updated in 2009. All these milestones have helped establish standards for quality, traceability and varieties (Golden, Red Delicious, Gala and Granny).

Another decisive step in this specialization has been the significant role of research programs carried out jointly with IRTA and Fruit Futur, focused on studying an optimal varietal reconversion adapted to new climatic conditions.

Also noteworthy in this take-off is the mandatory application of Integrated Production standards within the PGI and the international promotion carried out by PRODECA (Promotora de los Alimentos Catalanes).

Drought takes its toll

The forecast harvest for this campaign is 89,370 tons, a production that contrasts with the exceptional figure reached in 2024, when more than 100,000 tons were exceeded. This represents around 10% less production. However, the volume remains in line with the average of the last five years.

This production decline is linked to the persistent drought of recent years and, in one way or another, to the ongoing restrictions on irrigation, which have stressed the trees. Even though 2025 has not been a particularly problematic year in terms of water availability.

Varieties

Regarding varieties, the current season highlights the increase of the Granny group, which is up 19%; Cripps Pink, which has grown by 32%; and a group of new varieties, among which the Tutti variety stands out, with exceptional characteristics of adaptation to climate change.
