Carrefour drives solar energy across its hypermarkets

Carrefour Spain plans to close 2025 with 188 solar installations operating in its hypermarkets, covering a total surface area of 388,000 m²—equivalent to 55 professional football fields—positioning the company as a green energy leader in the retail sector

Carrefour continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency through self-consumption in its network of hypermarkets in Spain. The company, a market leader in the hyper format (with a 40% market share in this segment), expects to end 2025 with 188 rooftop solar panel installations in operation. This will bring its total to 388,000 square meters of panels—an area equal to 55 football fields—and an installed capacity of 81.7 megawatt-peak (MWp), representing 12 more installations and 26,000 additional square meters compared to the previous year.

Carrefour Spain, following a multi-million euro investment, launched its solar panel installation project in hypermarkets just over three years ago. Since then, it has reached a renewable energy generation capacity of 110 gigawatt-hours (GWh), avoiding the emission of more than 66,000 tonnes of CO₂—an impact equivalent to that of six million trees. With 108 GWh of green energy self-generated, Carrefour could power 44,000 homes for an entire year.

On average, these installations cover around 25% of each hypermarket’s energy demand, although the percentage varies depending on the store’s size and generation capacity. July and August are the peak production months.

Three years of strong commitment to solar energy

This infrastructure rollout is part of Carrefour’s global decarbonization plan, which combines energy efficiency, electrification, and green energy production to move toward a more sustainable model. The Carrefour Group’s goal is to become carbon-neutral by 2040. Within this framework, the photovoltaic self-consumption project aims to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency across its facilities.

Among the hypermarkets with the largest solar arrays are the Erandio center in Bilbao, with over 1,140 kilowatt-peak (kWp), and the Finestrat and San Juan centers in Alicante, with more than 1,060 kWp and 1,000 kWp, respectively.

Since launching the pilot phase in 2022 at seven locations, the company has already deployed 177 photovoltaic solar plants across its hypermarkets, totaling 77 MWp of power and covering 362,000 square meters.

Through this strong commitment to green energy, Carrefour Spain continues to move forward in its pledge to deliver responsible, efficient, and environmentally respectful retail. The company is positioning the hypermarket format as a key player in its energy transition strategy and has become one of the leading promoters of green energy in the Spanish retail sector.
