Edeka Südwest expands sales volume and grows steadily

According to its own reports, Edeka Südwest experienced stable economic development and moderate growth during the past financial year. The cooperative food retailer increased its affiliated retail sales volume in 2024 to a total of €10.7 billion, marking a 2.9% rise compared to the previous year

“Freshness, service, regional products – even in times of economic downturn and weakened consumer sentiment, we score points with our core strengths and all the benefits of the owner-operated Edeka full-range offering,” said Rainer Huber, spokesperson for the Edeka Südwest Executive Board. “At the same time, we are continuing to invest strategically in our sales network, digital transformation, and logistics infrastructure to further strengthen the competitiveness of Edeka retailers and secure our expansion,” Huber added.

In 2024, the Offenburg-based company opened a total of 24 new stores across all retail formats and expanded another 36. As a result, the total sales area of the now 1,116 retail locations in Edeka Südwest’s business territory increased to approximately 1.64 million m². The Edeka retailers organized within the regional company operated a total of 1,059 supermarkets and hypermarkets. The newly opened stores also included four locations of the expanding beverage specialist trinkgut, which Edeka Südwest integrated into its distribution network in 2024. The goal is to expand this number to around 30 stores by the end of 2025.

“Our focus remains firmly on qualitative space growth,” emphasized Rainer Huber. “That’s why we are continuously modernizing and expanding our existing stores where it makes sense and is feasible.” Over the past year, around 124,740 m² of retail space was upgraded. At the same time, the company advanced its privatization initiative: last year, the group transferred 14 previously wholesaler-managed stores to established Edeka entrepreneurs. Additionally, eight new entrepreneurs took the step into self-employment by opening their own supermarkets with the support of Edeka Südwest.

Edeka Südwest’s total investment in its retail infrastructure, distribution network, and IT systems amounted to approximately €307 million in 2024.
