Microsoft teams up with Agoro Carbon to cut 2.6 million tons of CO₂ through soil-based solutions

Agoro Carbon, a leading provider of agriculture-based carbon removal solutions, has signed a 12-year offtake agreement with Microsoft to supply 2.6 million soil carbon credits from projects across the United States. This marks one of the largest commitments to soil-based carbon removal ever made

Founded in 2021 by Norwegian crop nutrition company Yara, Agoro Carbon collaborates with farmers and ranchers to store carbon in the soil using regenerative farming practices such as cover cropping, reduced tillage, and enhanced grazing techniques. These methods not only sequester CO₂ but also improve farm resilience, soil health, biodiversity, water retention, and food security.

The company supports producers both agronomically and financially, helping them transition to more sustainable practices. In return, farmers gain access to a new income stream through carbon credits, while also benefitting from improved crop and forage yields, better input efficiency, and increased resistance to extreme weather conditions.

Elliot Formal, CEO of Agoro Carbon, emphasized the significance of the agreement:“This deal with Microsoft is a major endorsement of our farmer-first, quality-focused model for soil carbon sequestration. We’re committed to supporting producers throughout the journey, from adoption to long-term success, to build resilient and sustainable farming operations.”

Microsoft continues to lead the corporate push for carbon removal, having secured nearly 22 million tons of carbon offsets last year alone as part of its goal to become carbon negative by 2030. The company has recently announced several large-scale carbon removal agreements spanning technologies such as biochar, BECCS (bioenergy with carbon capture and storage), forest management, reforestation, and soil-based solutions. Among them is another recent soil carbon deal with Indigo Ag.

Agoro Carbon’s program meets Microsoft’s stringent standards for high-quality carbon removals, relying on advanced modeling, rigorous soil sampling, and third-party verification to ensure transparency and permanence.

Brian Marrs, Senior Director of Energy Markets at Microsoft, noted:“Agoro Carbon’s science-based approach to soil carbon removals fits perfectly with our sustainability objectives. This agreement supports our commitment to scalable, agriculture-driven climate solutions that provide measurable, lasting impact.”
