The introduction of the sustainability concept in business strategy and operations is crucial for several reasons: consumers are increasingly aware of sustainability; companies from the agrifood sector must adapt to the new regulations; sustainability implies a responsible management of the resources to guarantee the long-term feasibility of food production and, finally, climate change could have a significant impact on agriculture and on the food supply chain.
Consumers want to know about the products, the farming practices used and the associated environmental impact. Transparency along the supply chain is essential.
According to Quality & Adviser, sustainability in business strategy and operations in the agrifood sector is essential in order to face up to both current and future challenges, to meet the expectations of the market and to ensure the long-term resilience and feasibility of the company.
BioDiversity Grow is framed within this viewpoint. BioDiversity Grow was established in 2019 with the collaboration of the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, and it reflects the abovementioned concepts in a completely practical initiative, aimed at agricultural producers, packagers, along with industry and trade in which work is carried out on sustainability using three pillars.
The main aspects of the BioDiversity Grow programme are encompassed in the 2030 Agenda and the Green New Deal, amongst which an increase in biodiversity, integrated pest control, reduction in plant protection applications, control and efficiency in the use of water and fertilizers, reduction in nitrogenous pollution and control and reduction of emissions are all included.
Likewise, thanks to the application of the 17 SDGs, work is being carried out in companies on aspects that are complementary to production, such as social, environmental and circular economy factors.
Both Quality and Adviser, and the BioDiversity Grow Programme are working on a daily basis to ensure that their clients reach their goals, with the spotlight being placed on strengthening the agrifood sector in order to gain in competitiveness, both nationally and international, just as it deserves to.
