Little by little, Spanish mangoes are winning over consumers thanks to their excellent quality and proximity to European markets. This year could be “historic” for the recognition of Spanish mangoes in international markets.

Reyes Gutiérrez, one of the leading companies in the production and marketing of subtropical fruits in Málaga’s Axarquía region, aims to reaffirm the strength and continuity of Spanish mangoes in the European market. “The 2025 season will be characterized by a balance between production, domestic consumption and exports, without the risk of flooding EU markets. We believe there will be strong demand in the coming weeks,” the company stated in early September.

2025: expected production

In 2024, drought and low temperatures reduced the Spanish harvest to 19,860 t (FAO data). In 2025, production is expected to reach 30,000-35,000 t, similar to 2022. This increase will “help major market players regain confidence in Spain as a source during weeks 36 to 46.”

The 2025 season will be more abundant but still moderate, staggered and focused on rebuilding the confidence of European customers after two years of drought that left the market undersupplied. Thanks to a new water management policy with the new water pool, water supply will be guaranteed and so will the continuity of Spanish mangoes.

For Reyes Gutiérrez, the harvest will begin progressively, from week 36 to 46, with the following calendar: Osteen, weeks 36 to 42; Kent, 36 to 40; and Keitt, 40 to 46.

This staggering ensures an orderly and stable supply adapted to both domestic and international demand. “At Reyes Gutiérrez we reaffirm our commitment to sustainable production, maximum quality and responsible supply for both Spain and our international customers,” they emphasize.

Domestic consumption in Spain

According to FAO, national mango consumption stands at 42,055 t and continues to grow. “More than one third of production remains here, limiting the exportable volume. This means that even in the best-case scenario, there is not enough to cover even half of Europe’s needs. One must bear in mind that the European market consumes around 500,000 t (with a weekly average of 8,000-10,000 t), compared with the 30,000-35,000 t produced in Spain.”

Promotion in supermarkets

In the past two years, low national production has made it difficult for Spanish mangoes to appear in promotional leaflets from major retail chains. In 2025, with a more stable and guaranteed production, “we encourage supermarkets and retail chains to once again include Spanish mangoes in their campaigns and promotions.”

“Consuming local produce not only guarantees freshness and quality, but also supports our farmers, fosters sustainability and strengthens the local economy. This year, more than ever, we ask for Spanish mangoes to be visible and accessible on shelves and in promotions, so that consumers can choose a local product that is excellent and has its own identity.”

European market

According to FAO, in 2024 the main mango suppliers to the EU were Brazil (25%) and Peru (16%). Spain accounted for just 6% of the volume, with 33,806 t, including re-exports.

Spanish mangoes are concentrated between September and November, helping to complement the supply from third countries.
