SATI’s CEO, Mecia Petersen, highlighted the positive crop development thanks to favorable pre-harvest conditions. “Growing conditions have been favorable… and at this stage, we expect the 2025/26 harvest to deliver good-quality fruit and sufficient volumes to meet demand in our export markets,” she said.
Logistical improvements to boost exports
A key factor for the success of the upcoming season is the expectation of greater port efficiency. SATI noted that recent upgrades at the Cape Town Container Terminal (CTCT), managed by Transnet, are expected to support the peak export period.
Investment in equipment: Transnet has invested in new handling machinery as part of an operational restructuring plan.
New cranes: Eighteen new rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes are expected to be fully operational by the end of November, increasing the terminal’s capacity.
Petersen emphasized that these improvements, together with strengthened collaboration between Transnet and the private sector, aim to stabilize port performance. “An efficient supply chain logistics system is essential to ensure that South Africa remains a reliable global supplier of high-quality table grapes,” she added.

In addition, SATI continues to develop its Prescriptive Logistics Model in partnership with Transnova Africa. This data-driven model, designed to optimize export routes, is being expanded with the support of Transnet and the Western Cape Government to enhance real-time data exchange and logistical coordination.
New market openings and focus on North America
The 2025/26 season marks a significant milestone with the first-ever export of South African table grapes to the Philippines, following new market access approval earlier this year. The first shipments are expected later in the season, accompanied by promotional activities to introduce the fruit.
In North America, SATI plans to continue its market development activities in Canada and the United States, despite existing export tariffs. The sector’s goal remains to maintain its presence in the region and assess long-term market opportunities.
