The European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christophe Hansen, will make his first official visit to Spain next Thursday and Friday, with key meetings in Madrid and Valencia. During this trip, Hansen will address the situation of the Spanish agri-food sector and the revision of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), as well as express his support for farmers affected by the DANA storm of October 29.
Meeting with Minister Luis Planas and Regional Encounters
On Thursday, Hansen will meet in Madrid with the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAPA), Luis Planas, with whom he will travel to Valencia on Friday to continue his work agenda. According to the Minister of Agriculture of Castilla-La Mancha, Julián Martínez Lizán, the Commissioner will also hold meetings with regional agriculture ministers from different areas.
Support for Farmers and CAP Review
During his meeting with sector representatives, Hansen will reaffirm his commitment to Spanish agriculture and analyze the necessary measures to mitigate the effects of climate change in the agricultural sector.
This visit comes at a key moment, as the European Commission (EC) will soon present its “Vision on the Future of Agriculture and Food”, a document that will initiate discussions on the continuity and evolution of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
Furthermore, with the new European Union (EU) legislature underway, negotiations on the CAP review and the community budget for the 2028-2034 period are expected to begin.
Hansen’s trip is a gesture of support for the Spanish agricultural sector, at a time when farmers and agricultural organizations have called for greater assistance in facing the economic, climatic, and legislative challenges affecting agri-food production in Spain and across Europe.
