Walmart introduces Sparky, a generative AI assistant to plan, compare and shop smarter

Walmart is enhancing its tech capabilities with the launch of Sparky, a generative AI-powered assistant that synthesizes reviews and offers recommendations to help customers plan, compare, and make purchases

Shoppers can already use this technology across all product categories by clicking “Ask Sparky” in the Walmart app. The assistant helps users find items by gathering opinions and offering relevant information to prepare for any occasion—whether it’s keeping up with current sports events and finding the right jersey or planning a celebration.

According to Desiree Gosby, Senior Vice President of Technology Strategy and Emerging Technology at Walmart, “Sparky delivers instant, comprehensive responses to product-related questions, helping customers quickly understand specific features, compare items, and make informed decisions.”

The initiative includes features that will soon expand to reordering items and booking services. “It will be multimodal—able to understand text, images, audio, and video—and will integrate into customers’ lives to unlock instant access to the products and services they need, whenever and however they choose to shop,” Gosby adds. The goal is to “simplify everyday life and seamlessly embed into how customers shop and live.”

The assistant is designed to solve real-life problems through prompts like:

  • “What’s for dinner?” becomes a full week of family meal plans, with ingredients automatically added to the cart.

  • “How do I fix this leaky faucet?” turns into a step-by-step guide with the right tools delivered the same day.

  • “I need party ideas!” unfolds into a complete event planning session—theme, décor, food, and gifts—all personalized and budget-coordinated.
