Andalusia is the EU-27 region with the highest agricultural production value

Data from the EU’s statistical office, Eurostat, show that five regions in the European Union —classified at level 2 of the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS 2)— recorded a total agricultural production value exceeding €9 billion

The highest production value was reported in Andalusia (Spain) (€16 billion), followed by Brittany (France) (€11 billion), Weser-Ems (Germany) and Lombardy (Italy) (both with €9.8 billion), and Pays de la Loire (France) (€9.3 billion).

Eurostat’s figures come from regional data on the Economic Accounts for Agriculture at current prices, published on 28 November.

Within the EU’s total agricultural production, the value of vegetables and horticultural products amounted to €71.5 billion in 2023, the highest among all agricultural categories, representing 13.3% of the overall total.

Among EU regions, the highest value of vegetable production in 2023 was recorded in Andalusia (Spain) (€5.2 billion) and South Holland (Netherlands) (€5 billion).

They were followed by Apulia and Campania (Italy) and North Brabant (Netherlands), each with a production value of €1.8 billion.

In total, 14 regions of the European Union generated a vegetable and horticultural production value above €1 billion: five in Italy, five in the Netherlands and four in Spain.

Additionally, in four NUTS 2 regions, the share of vegetable and horticultural production exceeded 50% of total agricultural output: Vienna (Austria) (77.2%), South Holland (Netherlands) (68.4%), Liguria (Italy) (65%) and Hamburg (Germany) (50.8%).

In another 16 regions, vegetable and horticultural products accounted for between 30% and almost 50% of total agricultural production value, with figures ranging from 31.7% in La Rioja (Spain) to 48.5% in North Holland (Netherlands).
