Bayer’s pepper catalog has been strengthened in recent seasons with the addition of three varieties that enhance resistance to powdery mildew and expand productive options for growers. Last year, Bayer introduced the Lamuyo variety Bultaco, which received an excellent market reception, along with the new California variety Brasero. This year marks the third commercial season for Barreiros in the Lamuyo segment.
Francisco Tomillero, Pepper Development Technician at Bayer, explains that Bultaco has been well received by growers, demonstrating strong performance in both quality and yield. Recommended for transplanting between April 15 and July 15, this variety stands out for its rusticity, vigor, and medium-to-large fruit size.
Meanwhile, Barreiros is now in its third year on the market, showing stable sales and strong field performance. Its optimal transplanting period is between July 10 and 30. Both Lamuyo varieties feature resistance to powdery mildew, L4, and spotted, ensuring strong disease protection. Additionally, they share a robust, vigorous plant structure, adapting well to different conditions and delivering early medium-to-large fruits with high yields.
Brasero: A promising California variety
Brasero has had a promising debut in the California segment. Growers appreciate it for its ease of management, consistent sizing throughout the cycle, and its resistance to early-season overripening.

Additionally, Brasero offers excellent fruit retention, allowing growers to better plan their harvest and maintain high product quality. It features resistance to powdery mildew, L4, and spotted, along with good resistance to cracking. Moreover, its open plant structure and well-defined stems help limit pest outbreaks, particularly Parvispinus, a key factor in crop health.
With these additions, Bayer continues to innovate in the pepper sector, providing resistant varieties tailored to the needs of growers in Almería.
