Cosco to maintain stability despite Trump

Cosco Shipping Lines has assured that it will continue to provide “stable and reliable” services in the United States, despite the new charges announced by the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), which will affect Chinese shipping operators starting October 14, 2025

The measure, announced by the USTR on April 17, 2025, also applies to all Chinese shipowners and operators. It is part of a broader U.S. strategy to reduce reliance on vessels linked to China and to revitalize its own shipbuilding industry.

“Although these tariffs may pose certain operational challenges, Cosco Shipping Lines remains confident in its ability to ensure stable and reliable services in the United States. We are committed to maintaining a stable capacity deployment and consistent service quality, offering safe, reliable, and high-quality logistics solutions,” the Chinese shipping company stated in a note to its customers.

“At the same time, we are actively expanding our product portfolio to respond to the changing demands of the U.S. market. We will maintain competitive rates and surcharges, along with related policies that adapt to market conditions,” the company added.

Within this context, Cosco Shipping emphasized that the company “has been deeply involved in the U.S. market, strictly complying with all applicable laws, regulations, and policy requirements.

“We have always been a reliable partner in facilitating U.S. import and export trade. Looking ahead, we will demonstrate resilience and determination, with a firm commitment to service excellence and value delivery, while continuing to serve the U.S. market,” it added.

For its part, Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), based in Hong Kong, also announced that it will maintain its commitment to the U.S. market despite the tariff imposed on Chinese ships and shipowners.
