There is no autumn without persimmons, a fruit that is experiencing a revival thanks to the innovation that is characterizing its offer. For this reason, It’s Bio, the project funded by the European Union and AOP Gruppo Vi.Va. that promotes the values and benefits of organic fruit and vegetables in Italy, Belgium, and Greece, celebrates its characteristics and potential in terms of health and the environment thanks to the European organic certification.
Persimmons color autumn tables orange thanks to their richness in vitamin A. They are a tasty fruit, sweet but without too many calories, there are just 70 per 100 grams of product.
They are historically a very commercialized fruit but over the years, they have undergone continuous ups and downs. Today they are in the process of relaunching thanks to varietal and technological innovations that allow you to always eat them at their best. This is the case with the new Maxim® variety, a very early and seedless variety that can be harvested in September with hard, non-astringent flesh. Maxim® meets the interest of organic consumers, as confirmed by Cesare Gridelli, Director of Ca’ Nova (commercial branch of the OP Apofruit Italia adhering to the AOP Gruppo VI.VA. and reference for the marketing of the Group’s organic products): “This commercial campaign confirms the important role of persimmon in the seasonality of the offer, especially thanks to the varietal innovations that meet the needs of consumers who appreciate the taste of the fruit, its healthiness and a better consumption experience.”
Global market
The global persimmon market is worth almost 0.84 billion dollars and Europe, after Asia, is the most important continent, both in terms of production and market. Italy has an important role in terms of production with Emilia Romagna and Campagna as production leaders with over 20,000 tons each. Persimmon lends itself very well to organic production. It is a rustic plant, not particularly demanding in terms of soil and exposure. It suffers from excessive temperatures, both in summer and winter. It is not particularly attacked by insects or fungal pathogens, which is why it is ideal for organic production.
