Keops Agro works in the ecological sector as it is fully convinced by the cultivation system and the importance of sustainability. A philosophy that it imprints on each link of its daily work and where it has taken a step further through its commitment to regenerative farming. Accordingly, the company from Almeria holds the Epigen Healthy Bite stamp. This seal implies that they use sustainable production techniques that pursue two essential aspects: the active capturing of carbon in the soil (measured by university research studies) and the highest natural form of the foods. These are benefits that they pass on to consumers through a QR on the packaging, where a description details all the nutritional compounds and beneficial metabolites of each product.
Francisco Javier del Águila, Manager of Keops, underscores the importance of crop regeneration for the microbioma in the soil and the subsequent benefit for the plant, as well as greater water retention in the soil structure. “With this system we look after the environment and the fruit acquires its highest natural form. In this way, consumers take advantage of the entire potential of the food.”
Great demand for Karamel
Keops is maintaining its line of stability. This year it has increased the volume by +5% compared to last year, and it foresees following the same line next year, with the exception of an increase in the surface area for Karamel. “We have experienced a very strong increase in the demand for Karamel Rome (vine cherry tomato), which continues to rise. The demand is very significant, both in France and in Germany,” Francisco Javier del Águila affirms.
The premium range of cherry tomatoes is included in its portfolio with Karamel Cerisse (round) and Rome, a vine tomato, along with cucumbers, limes and oranges, two lines where the production is increasing. Additionally, in this campaign they have taken up watermelon production; in this case ecological seedless mini watermelons, with great flavour and a very good post-harvest. “The quality of the skin and the consistency has been greatly improved.”
As a new development, this year they have invested in renewable energies to ensure that the entire energy consumption by the preparation centre is sustainable.
