Natural Tropic continues to be one of the main agents in the tropical fruit sector. This year, the company has exceeded all expectations regarding the initial forecasts they had for mangos, closing the campaign with 800,000 kg. In the case of avocados, the increase in new farms in the Cadiz and Huelva regions has made up for the reduction in volumes from the Malaga and Granada coastal areas as a result of the drought. Bearing this in mind, they expect to increase the avocado production volume by 30%, compared to the 2023 campaign.
The water shortage is the subject that concerns producers most. Many farmers are abandoning their crops due to this problem (as there is no sign of this being resolved in the short term), in addition to other difficulties, such as the rise in input costs. Accordingly, the Manager of Natural Tropic, Prudencio López, affirms that it is essential for the public administrations to make a serious commitment to the sector. At present, “there is no clear policy in terms of agriculture. There is a significant lack of planning and investment that is causing great uncertainty.”
On the other side of the Gibraltar straits, the Kingdom of Morocco is improving its positioning all the time, and this year it is going to exceed Spain in terms of production. “There, the public administration is doing its homework,” the Manager of Natural Tropic states. “It has started up the necessary infrastructures, and it is generating millions of euros thanks to its commitment and investment. The Morocco Green Plan gives the producers security.” A reality which, in his opinion, should be replicated in Spain. “We need a commitment to our agriculture.”
Pistachios
Natural Tropic’s strategy involves diversifying its range. To do this, it has incorporated a new reference, the pistachio. The company started growing them two and a half years ago, and it will market them for the first time in this campaign, reaching a volume of 50 tonnes. They already have 70 has planted in the town of Caniles, in the Granada region, and a project is being studied to build a processing plant and expand this new business line, adding pistachio processing to its activity.
