Plus Berries focuses its campaign on the quality of Nova mandarins

The producer group Plus Berries has officially kicked off its citrus campaign with the start of the harvest of the Nova mandarin

This variety, firmly established as a benchmark in the province of Huelva, will set the pace of the company’s activity throughout the month of December. The technical team is approaching the season with the aim of maximising fruit quality in an agricultural year that has presented specific climatic challenges during the growing cycle.

The development of the current campaign has been largely shaped by the weather conditions recorded in spring. According to Ioana Daniela Paucian, citrus production technician at the company, rainfall coincided with the flowering and fruit set stages, naturally regulating the tree load. This factor has resulted in a more limited production volume compared to previous years, allowing the company to focus its efforts on the careful selection and management of the existing fruit.

The ‘Nova’ variety, the standout of the season

Plus Berries’ production structure for this campaign covers a total of 56 hectares of citrus. Of this area, 22 hectares are devoted to the Nova variety, which is currently being harvested. The company’s planning ensures continuity of supply through late orange varieties. Once the mandarin season comes to an end, the harvest of the Barnfield variety is expected to begin in late February, followed by Valencia Midnight towards the end of March.

From a phytosanitary perspective, the campaign is being carried out under strict technical supervision due to the presence of common local issues such as cotonet. Plus Berries’ production team has focused its strategy on close monitoring and control of the orchards, optimising available resources to mitigate the impact of these pests and ensure that fruit reaches the market in line with required standards.

Excellence for the consumer

Nova mandarins remain the company’s flagship variety thanks to their excellent post-harvest performance. For consumers, the variety stands out for its resilience, maintaining its properties intact for up to two weeks after purchase, thus guaranteeing a high-quality consumption experience.
