Benihort strengthens its connection between production and commercialisation

After a campaign with strong sales and favourable prices, Benihort begins the new season facing challenges driven by competition from third countries and the need to ensure effective generational renewal in the fields

The Benicarló-based cooperative closed the 2024/25 citrus campaign with a positive balance: strong sales pace, stable consumption and satisfactory prices for growers. High volumes and acceptable yields per hectare were achieved, consolidating a stable year for the organisation.

However, the start of the new season has been more complex. According to Luís Montañés, Commercial Director of the fruit and vegetable division, the first three weeks of November were marked by “very low demand” due to the strong presence of overseas fruit in the European market. “The arrival of South African Nadorcott in the EU caused rejection towards our early varieties, with extremely low consumption and a late start for clemenules at declining prices,” he explains.benihort-almacen citricos-3

In response to this context, Benihort is committed to greater technological development in its packing operations, aiming to reinforce the link with the field and ensure a stable supply aligned with market requirements. The cooperative works with club varieties such as Tango, Nadorcott, Leanri and Valey Gold, most of which are exported to EU countries including Germany, France, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Sweden, Denmark and Norway.

The long-term strategy is based on strengthening technical support for growers and providing tools to address one of today’s major challenges: generational renewal. “Our commercial project relies directly on maintaining an active, professional production base,” Montañés emphasises.

Furthermore, the recent acquisition of Transportes Monllau has enabled the cooperative to optimise its internal logistics and open new opportunities in external transport services, thus reinforcing its integrated structure across the entire value chain.
