Italy is selling its kiwis at high prices, particularly in destinations where Greece cannot reach due to a lack of suitable sizes or to the signing of export protocols.
The campaign started off early. In fact, Chile ended its season much earlier than usual. This early end created an important gap in the market and demand shot up, although it is calming down as the campaign progresses.
Italian sales results in overseas destinations are satisfactory. Proof of this are the sales to Taiwan, where, in addition to a good demand, there is an important knowledge and culture of all things kiwi.
This year, Greek kiwi calibres are large and the country is having problems to serve produce to markets that require smaller fruit.
One of these cases is the Brazilian market, with which the Greeks have already signed an export protocol and, therefore, they have the go ahead for their kiwi exports.
It is worth mentioning that Iran is a country that is gaining ground every year, producing high-quality fruit. In fact, Indian companies have changed suppliers and instead of being supplied with very high-priced fruit from Greece, they are now getting their kiwis from Iran.
