Spain’s fresh produce imports grow in first half of 2025

Spain increased its fresh fruit and vegetable imports in the first six months of 2025, with volumes rising by 9 per cent and value by 14 per cent year on year, according to data from the Department of Customs and Excise compiled by Fepex. Total imports reached 2.4m tonnes worth €2.96bn, continuing the upward trend of recent years

Vegetable imports grew 11 per cent to 1.2m tonnes between January and June, with value up 6 per cent to €897m. Potatoes remained the leading imported product overall, with 737,480 tonnes (up 7 per cent). However, their value fell 7 per cent to €306m. Onions ranked second among vegetables, climbing 32 per cent in volume to 121,360 tonnes and 14 per cent in value to €70m.

Fruit imports also advanced, totalling 1.2m tonnes (+7 per cent) and €2.06bn (+19 per cent). The average import price for fruit rose by 11 per cent to €1.70/kg. Bananas once again led fruit imports with 211,288 tonnes worth €148m.

Avocados, however, showed the most striking growth. Imports increased 24 per cent in volume to 147,063 tonnes, while value jumped 17 per cent to €327m – making avocados Spain’s top fruit import by value. Apples ranked third, with a slight 3 per cent drop in volume to 100,544 tonnes, while their value rose 4 per cent to €111m.
