Spanish lemon production will remain above 1Mt, but falls 18%

The crop estimate by AILIMPO (the Spanish Lemon and Grapefruit Interprofessional Association) for the upcoming 2025/2026 season is 1,027,000 tons, representing an 18% decline

Final production for the 2024/2025 season closed at 1,254,000 tons, according to the provisional balance that accounts for exported, processed and domestically marketed fruit, as well as weight losses and cold damage.

AILIMPO, with representatives from ASAJA, COAG, UPA, cooperatives, exporters and processors, has validated the harvest forecast and set the strategic guidelines for this new lemon campaign, focused on consolidating the leadership of ‘Spanish Lemon’ and generating profitability for all links in the chain.

By variety, although total cultivated area remains practically unchanged at around 50,000 hectares, production is expected to fall by 15% for Fino and 25% for Verna. Climate change effects have created adverse conditions during flowering and fruit set stages, with a significant increase in spring rainfall and higher-than-usual June temperatures.

The effort and work of growers, supported by AILIMPO’s AGEFIS phytosanitary monitoring project funded by the Statutory Levy, has achieved greater efficiency in pest control this season, allowing better fruit quality and greater commercial use for the fresh market.

Grapefruit

The harvest estimate for grapefruit in 2025/2026 forecasts Spanish production of 101,660 tons, a slight 5% decline compared to the 2024/2025 production balance, which closed with a final production of 107,010 tons, according to the provisional balance that accounts for exported, processed and domestically marketed fruit, as well as weight and cold damage losses.

The discrepancies between the volumes estimated by MAPA (+8%) and those of AILIMPO (-5%) are explained by the fact that although new plantations are entering production, existing ones show significant declines due to the impact of adverse weather conditions.
