Sunions extends its season

BASF Nunhems’ sweet and tear-free proposal gains traction in Europe and grows through counter-season imports to expand shelf availability

Sunions, the ‘first onion that won’t make you cry’ from BASF | Nunhems, continues to establish itself as a reference in the premium segment thanks to its sweet flavour and crunchy texture that ensure delicious, tear-free dishes during preparation.

“We are positioned in both the domestic and export markets, but we’re seeing the most growth in countries like Germany, France and Portugal, where the sweet onion concept is still emerging and generating great interest,” explains Crisanto Ampuero, Consumer & Customer Manager at BASF Nunhems.

Unlike in Spain, where consumers are already familiar with sweet onions, in these markets the novelty of the product has enabled faster penetration.

Towards full-year availability

BASF’s goal is to ensure Sunions are available year-round. Currently, its domestic production season runs from December to May. Starting this year, the supply will be supplemented with counter-season imports from Australia and South America, primarily Chile, aiming to offer product through to September.

“The big challenge is closing the annual cycle to avoid gaps that cause consumers to forget about the product. We’re already covering eight to nine months, but we want to reach October–November before restarting the domestic season,” says Ampuero.

Wider reach

Commercially, Sunions are available in Spanish chains such as Eroski, El Corte Inglés and Gadis, and in international banners like Rewe (Germany), Pingo Doce (Portugal) and Carrefour (France). Soon, the brand could be listed in Edeka, which would mark a major step forward in its European expansion.

“Right now our focus is Europe. As the product becomes more established, we’re considering production in other countries like Hungary.”

Looking ahead, one of the strategic options on the table is co-branding with retail chains, provided the product’s quality and differentiation are maintained. “We go to market with the Sunions brand, but in some supermarkets, a shared label could be considered if it helps reach more consumers.”

A sweet revolution

Sunions are the result of over three decades of research using traditional, 100% natural agronomic techniques. With this variety, BASF Nunhems aims to stand out in the sweet onion category.

It is notable not only for its mild flavour, but also for its lack of irritating volatile compounds, which prevents the usual tearing when slicing. “Cutting onions has never been so easy and pleasant,” the company sums up.

This commitment to innovation also translates into a versatile culinary product: perfect for eating raw in salads or sandwiches, or in cooked dishes like omelettes, stews or caramelised onions. In addition to its organoleptic qualities, it’s also a 100% natural product grown in Spain.

Sunions have won over both professionals and end consumers. “Sunions have revolutionised the way I cook—where have they been all this time?” says Andrés, a loyal customer. “Cooking them is great, but eating them raw, with that texture and sweetness, is the real revolution,” adds Tamara, another regular consumer.
