Top Seeds is entering 2025 with significant innovations. In open-field crops, Nilo, their first commercial broccoli variety, has demonstrated strong resistance to fungal issues caused by high humidity. This was showcased to growers and technicians during technical workshops held at the end of the year in Lorca. The variety, suitable for cycles of 75 to 90 days, has established itself as a recommended option for production programs in 2025/2026. According to Antonio Ginés Beltrán, Top Seeds’ development manager, “Nilo has shown lower incidence of botrytis on the head compared to other varieties in its segment and has proven its consistency under different climatic conditions.”
This year, they are preparing to launch BRC-420, a continuation of Nilo aimed at October plantings. “It stands out for its fine grain size and intense dark green color, offering a different and more adaptable concept.” They are currently developing a tray-seeding program for February plantings and continuing the selection of B1 in the region.
Carlitos and more resistant varieties
In protected crops, Carlitos has become Top Seeds’ first tomato variety resistant to the rugose virus (ToBRFV). “We are evaluating the final results, but it has already shown great quality and is being recommended by some cooperatives in the area.” Among its advantages are its strong performance against rugose (“the plant can continue producing and ‘saves’ the season”) and its deep red color and excellent post-harvest qualities, ideal for export.
Simultaneously, Top Seeds is preparing to launch two Roma tomato varieties for the domestic market resistant to rugose, leaf curl, bronzing, and Stemphylium. The first, 909A, is for under-net cultivation in Murcia with March and June/July planting cycles. Its plant exhibits vigor and strength, is highly productive, and its fruits are large, averaging 180 grams per fruit. The second, 3063P, produces smaller fruits (150 grams), more elongated with a deeper red color and great firmness. “We will test it under-net in the same segment as 909A and during August/September.”
Presence at Fruit Logistica
Top Seeds will be present at Fruit Logistica in Hall 1.2, B-33, alongside Isi Sementi, following the integration of both companies into a single entity at the end of 2024.
