This year, Spain will produce just over 8 million units of Poinsettia, a figure that is very similar to that of 2021. They are being grown mainly in Andalusia, but also particularly in Almeria, the Valencian Community and Catalonia.
Almeria has become consolidated as one of the main producing provinces of Poinsettia. Over the past decade it has tripled its production, reaching 3.5 million units, meaning that it is the top producer in Spain, according to Francisco Rubio, head of the Ornamental section of the Asociacion de Organizaciones de Productores de Frutas y Hortalizas de Almeria (COEXPHAL – the Association of Fruit and Vegetable Producers of Almeria), which is a member of FEPEX.
This is possible thanks to the fact that “the weather conditions are quite favourable for this crop and it also covers a time of year when we can prepare a quality plant,” according to Francisco Rubio, who emphasises that the Poinsettia that is produced in the province is mainly the red variety, in a 14 cm format, as these are the ones preferred by consumers. However, there are companies that produce Poinsettias in other colours to diversify the offer.
