Arkane, Top Seeds’ variety, is becoming a reference option for California pepper growers in Almería. With a strong root system, characteristic of Top Seeds genetics, and an open plant structure, it offers a combination of easy management, high fruit quality, and strong resistance (L4, Spotted, and powdery mildew), winning over the farmers who have placed their trust in it.
“Everyone who tries it, comes back,” says Diego Guirado, Sales Representative, highlighting the excellent reception in the field. Arkane is suited for plantations between July 10 and 25, depending on the area. It adapts well to difficult soils and regions with high water conductivity, such as Adra, maintaining quality throughout the entire growing cycle.
Its open plant structure improves ventilation and reduces the incidence of pests by minimizing hiding spots where they could proliferate. “This makes treatments easier and enhances the crop’s overall health.” The small leaf size, combined with its natural curling, can be beneficial in combating pests that have caused severe damage in the fields this year.
When it comes to production, Arkane maintains a G-GG commercial size until the end of the cycle, with well-formed, four-lobed fruits and a beautiful, uniform color in both green and red. Additionally, its manual harvesting process does not require scissors, speeding up labor, reducing costs, and lowering the risk of disease transmission.
This year, Arkane’s promotion has been reinforced in Berja, Adra, El Ejido, and Campohermoso, confirming strong interest from growers. The variety is expected to continue expanding in the upcoming season.
A Tradition That Stands the Test of Time
Alongside Arkane, one of Top Seeds’ most recognized traditional varieties, Arnon, celebrates 10 years, maintaining a strong base of loyal growers who trust its advantages. “Some producers use it as part of a two-phase planting strategy, as it allows for quick yield collection with strong returns by mid-January, after which they switch to another crop. With proper management from the start, it performs well.”
Galiano also remains a strong contender. “An excellent pepper in terms of yield, quality, highly commercial size, and fruit durability. With proper humidity control and continuous monitoring, it delivers great results.”
