The sector’s 4th Technical Seminars have put the emphasis on the most urgent requirements that must be resolved for continued growth.
Over five hundred people took part in the 4th Technical Seminars organised by the Tropical Fruit Association, held on the 6th of April in Alhaurín de la Torre. The presentations, focussed on avocado growing in Israel and the new developments that had been promoted to revitalise this event, were the event’s main attractions. For the first time, the talks developed over an entire day’s seminar and, additionally, an exhibition was held where the main producing and marketing companies in the sector, as well as others from the auxiliary industry, showed their product offer.
This year the seminars’ slogan was “Sustainable Production” and the leading country, Israel. Topics of vital importance such as the lack of water and infrastructures to channel it, as well as the low yield of national crops, were the main points of the opening ceremony. These are essential questions, since they hamper the chance of growth in a segment with a highly significant growth potential.
The emotional point was given by the tribute paid to José María Farré, an agronomical engineer and former director of the Tropical Fruit Growing Department at the Instituto de Hortofruticultura Subtropical y Mediterránea La Mayora. He has been fundamental for the development of tropical fruit crops in Spain, as the sector acknowledged, with a standing ovation whilst he was given the award.
