This study, which is still in its early stages, aims to gain an in-depth understanding of how consumption trends and other economic factors are impacting the fruit and vegetable market. According to its manager, Santiago Blázquez, ‘questionnaires and meetings are being conducted with sector companies, and various economic circumstances that may influence its development are being analyzed. Additionally, Asomafrut is in contact with other operators and stakeholders in the channel to gain a complete view of the situation and develop strategies to strengthen the sector.’
The first report from this analysis is expected to be published before the summer, providing a foundation for future decision-making.
Administrative concession
One of the key issues on the sector’s agenda is the administrative concession of the Central Fruit Market of Madrid, which expires in 2032. Although seven years remain until its expiration, negotiations with the Madrid City Council have already begun to seek a solution that ensures stability for the wholesalers operating within the market. In this regard, it was crucial for the City Council to guarantee the continuity of public service.
Asomafrut considers it essential for wholesale companies to plan their investments and long-term strategies with greater certainty. The association is engaged in discussions with authorities to reach an agreement that ensures the continuity and development of the market within a transforming sector.
International support
Beyond its representative role, Asomafrut plays a crucial role in assisting and supporting its members across various areas. One of the primary challenges for wholesalers is the increasing bureaucratic burden they face, from health regulations to tax and administrative requirements such as registration with AICA. In this context, the association acts as an intermediary and facilitator, helping its members implement digital solutions that streamline these processes and ensure compliance with current regulations.
Additionally, Asomafrut promotes the internationalization of its members by supporting their participation in specialized trade fairs and events in the fruit and vegetable sector across different markets. These fairs serve as key platforms for wholesalers to expand their businesses, forge new commercial alliances, and access foreign markets more easily.
A key support for wholesalers
Asomafrut represents nearly one hundred wholesale companies operating in the Central Fruit Market of Madrid, a strategic hub for fruit and vegetable distribution in Spain. With more than 2 million tons of fruit and vegetables traded annually, the market is a cornerstone of the food supply chain and a key point for supplying both retail businesses and the food service and large distribution sectors.
Asomafrut’s role in representing the sector is crucial, not only as a liaison with public administrations but also as a mediator among various market stakeholders. The association actively works to defend the interests of its members and contribute to the modernization of the wholesale channel, promoting its competitiveness in an increasingly demanding environment.
