Bayer Seminis strengthens its varietal innovation at Fruit Attraction

Bayer Seminis arrives at the trade fair with new tomato, cucumber, melon and watermelon varieties aimed at improving crop resilience, grower profitability and adaptation to evolving consumer demand

Genetic innovation continues to shape the future of horticulture, and Bayer Seminis is coming to Fruit Attraction with a portfolio that responds to three major market trends: the search for more resilient crops, the need to maximise grower profitability and changing consumption habits towards more practical and convenient products.

Innovation in tomato

In fresh-market tomato, one of the main new developments is Peramy (SVTJ7932), Bayer Seminis’ first export pear tomato with intermediate resistance to Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV). The variety combines this trait with good fruit size, colour and post-harvest performance, qualities that are particularly relevant for European markets.

The company is also expanding its portfolio with pre-commercial materials in the truss, beef and loose tomato segments, developed to combine resistance, yield, quality and adaptation to different production and commercial systems.

These are joined by Darefort (DRTX0318), a new Bayer DeRuiter tomato rootstock with intermediate resistance to ToBRFV and high resistance to Fusarium Fol 0-3. Its generative behaviour reinforces the role of rootstocks within integrated crop management strategies, where varietal resistance should be complemented by hygiene, prevention and monitoring measures.

In processing tomato, Bayer Seminis is moving forward with SVTM9034 and SVTM9039, two new materials from the Tomate90 range. Their development is aimed at delivering yield potential, fruit quality and adaptation to different industrial uses, with traits such as Fusarium resistance, concentrated ripening, firmness and colour playing a key role in profitability.

Precision in cucumber

In cucumber, the company is introducing Calidus and Galdius. Calidus stands out for its robustness, adaptability to different growing conditions and stability throughout the crop cycle, while Galdius is designed to concentrate production during the winter months, when the crop can achieve higher commercial value.

Both varieties form part of the Precisión Pro range, a concept through which Bayer Seminis aims to simplify varietal choice and provide greater certainty when planning growing seasons.

Convenience in melon and watermelon

Innovation is also being directed towards one of the major shifts in purchasing habits: demand for practical, ready-to-eat products. In watermelon, Bayer Seminis is presenting Polinesia and Romanesia, two new additions designed to strengthen its offering for the European market, with a focus on agronomic performance, quality and current marketing requirements.

In melon, SVMP6001 expands the Piel de Sapo portfolio with a variety offering high yield potential and quality attributes tailored to one of the most representative segments of the Spanish market.

This approach is also reflected in the “Ready to Enjoy” concept, with materials designed for fresh-cut and ready-to-eat applications. These include Durlinda, an ultra-firm watermelon developed specifically for processing, capable of maintaining its quality after cutting and minimising liquid release.
