This year, Seminis is bringing a highly important new development to its cucumber portfolio: its new QR Generation, with which it is taking a step further in its well-known line of Liga Super Root Non Stop. The initials QR respond to Quality & Resistant, Sheila Cruz, Market Development Representative, explained to Fruit Today at the Prime Presentation of the first variety with which they have inaugurated this generation of materials. A variety aimed at September plantations, looking to the autumn, with a sturdy plant, ideal for long cycles, with hardly any production halts and an excellent regrowth capacity in low-temperature conditions. This material also offers a complete package of resistances to CGMMV, yellowing, veins and powdery mildew, in addition to good behaviour against New Delhi.

With the new variety, Bayer is maintaining the high standards that characterise the company, the result of an open, highly generative plant, giving an added bonus on the subject of quality (with dark green, straight, uniform, deeply grooved fruit with no bottlenecks…) and an excellent post-harvest that allows the cucumber to be marketed ‘naked’ and to reach more distant destinations. In this way, it has jumped on the bandwagon of the plastic-free and food waste trends. “In several studies, we have confirmed that the fruit from our new variety lasts three days longer than others present on the market,” Sheila Cruz explains.

Bayer’s offer in cucumber is extensive and enjoys recognition in the sector. Its ‘Liga Super Root Non Stop’ offers highly consolidated varieties. This is the case of Invictus, ideal for the hot months, as it is highly appreciated due to its quality and fast entry into production.

For the autumn cycle, the reference in quality is SV5047CE, which brings the four resistances (CGMMV, yellowing, yellow vein and powdery mildew) and it has no stopping period. Finally, the variety SV0091CE is worth mentioning, which is already consolidated in the winter cycle due to its production. This material, with hardly any stops in shank and regrowth, produces excellent quality fruit and fourfold resistance.
