Since its founding in 2013, Sur Seeds has pursued a business model centered on research, development, and seed production within its home territory. This strategy allows its varieties to be perfectly adapted to the diverse growing conditions across the province, with trials ranging from Níjar to Berja.
Pepper is the company’s flagship crop, and this season, the spotlight is on Bazuka, Trabuco, and Ariete.
Promising outlook for Bazuka
Bazuka, its most recent release, is targeted at Berja and Dalías for plantings between May 15 and June 25, and in El Ejido from June 25 to July 10. It is a plant with ‘high fruit-setting ability and quality in the first set,’ explains Germán Ureña, technical sales representative. The fruits are uniform and maintain a square shape throughout the cycle, with excellent performance under heat, high yields, and very good post-harvest quality. It offers resistance to diseases like spotted wilt, powdery mildew, and L4, and shows good tolerance to cracking and blossom-end rot. ‘This will be its first commercial year, and expectations are quite high,’ Ureña adds.
More varieties
Now in its second year, Trabuco is becoming the company’s earliest variety. Aimed at early cycles, it stands out for its fast production onset, ability to set fruit under shading, and potential for long cycles—unlike other materials in its segment. It offers resistance to nematodes, spotted wilt, powdery mildew, and L4, and performs well against cracking. In El Ejido farms planted in late June, it has achieved yields of up to 12 kg/m², demonstrating high production potential under optimal management conditions.
Ureña recommends nitrogen-rich fertilization and maintaining shading during summer.
As for Ariete, it continues gaining ground in the late season segment, with steady growth in acreage over the past four years. Recommended for plantings between July 25 and August 10 in El Ejido, it is known for vigorous regrowth in January and February, providing an extra yield boost. It is a versatile option, suitable for both green and red harvesting, with resistance to spotted wilt, powdery mildew, L4, and strong tolerance to cracking.
