After several years marked by drought, national production is expected to increase by between 20% and 30% compared to last season, driven mainly by the rainfall recorded last spring in the Axarquía region (Málaga), which concentrates the majority of Spain’s avocado cultivation.
In addition, the planted area continues to expand significantly, particularly in Cádiz, Huelva and the Valencian Community, confirming both the crop’s development and Spain’s growing role as a European benchmark in avocado production.
During the first weeks of the campaign, harvesting is focused on smooth-skinned varieties such as Bacon, Fuerte, Zutano and Ettinger. The Hass variety, the most consumed both nationally and internationally, will not reach optimal levels of ripeness and quality for marketing until mid-November.
For this reason, the OIAM is issuing a clear message to the sector and the retail industry: Spanish Hass avocados should not be harvested or marketed prematurely.

Ensuring product quality at the point of sale is essential to protect the image of Spanish avocados and guarantee a satisfactory consumer experience.
“Quality is our best calling card. If we harvest the fruit too early, we harm the consumer and the value of our product. Let’s work together to defend the prestige of Spanish avocados,” the Interprofessional Organization emphasised.
The OIAM will continue to monitor the progress of the season and keep all stakeholders in the value chain informed.
