Mexican mango growers target new international markets

Small-scale mango producers in Mexico are seeking stronger commercial positioning in international markets, while also working to strengthen the national production system in terms of infrastructure, productivity, and food safety and phytosanitary certifications

CONASPROMANGO is a non-profit organisation that represents the mango production sector in Mexico. It was founded in 1992 in the city of Colima by 12 states of the Mexican Republic.

According to Engineer Daniel Radilla, the organisation’s top representative, “In Mexico, we have 53,873 producers, of which 70% are small growers with fewer than 5 hectares. In the state of Guerrero alone, we are 9,000 producers, accounting for 16%.”

He adds: “In 2024, the planted area in Mexico totalled 207,086 hectares, of which 196,000 hectares were harvested, yielding 2,156,040 tonnes. In Guerrero, 27,246.80 hectares were harvested, with a production of 411,173 tonnes.”

Challenges for small mango producers

Regarding the challenges faced by small mango growers in Mexico, Radilla explains: “We must promote the integral development of mango-producing regions through productive integration along the value chain.”

He continues: “It is vital to strengthen research and development related to productivity, phytosanitary conditions, food safety, added value and overall efficiency across the entire production chain.”

“We also need to reinforce coordination between public and private institutions in order to enhance the sector’s capabilities,” he adds.

Furthermore, CONASPROMANGO’s leader emphasises that “it is essential to promote the adoption of sustainability certifications across the entire production chain, due to the growing global demand for products obtained through good agricultural practices and from companies with social and environmental responsibility.
