Colours, sizes and resistances

Enza Zaden is extending its portfolio with new varieties for south-east Spain

The pepper crop is a priority for Enza Zaden in south east Spain. In fact, a good part of the research that is carried out in El Ejido is devoted to the different typologies with the diversity of colours that we can find on the market. When developing new materials, they give priority to flavour and sustainability, using the latest technologies. Another of the foundations of its R&D is obtaining fruit with a high quality level and greater resistance to the most common viruses in different areas to prevent drops in production, which means a bonus in profitability for farmers along with easier handling. Accordingly, Enza Zaden is already marketing varieties that are resistant to mildew, an aspect that has been in great demand for many years now.

Amongst the most innovative concepts on offer, the Tapered line stands out, with an extensive range in sizes (80 to 150 grams/piece) and a great diversity of colours (red, yellow and orange), giving companies a chance to market different formats. Added to all of this is flavour, a differential value as its fruits, with 8-10º Brix, have an “extraordinary sweetness”. Examples of this are Sixto (red), Jersey (yellow), Guernsey (orange) and Skytia (white).

Within the largest commercial segment, the California, the main new development is the yellow pepper E20B.10242, with transplanting that ranges from May in the earliest areas to mid-July in the latest ones. It is resistant to powdery mildew, Tm3 and Spotted and it is the first step in a new range of varieties that will be presented next year and will complete the company’s current offer in which they insert very well known materials such as Celaya, Deniro, Carmelo, Cartujo and Carrasco.

For the next campaign, they are working on the development of Tapered and Mini-tapered peppers, resistant to powdery mildew and to complete the California red and orange range, where they have reference varieties such as Tabor, Liad and Mozart.

Tribelli®, a reference in sweet pepper

If Enza stands out for a single product, this must be its Tribelli line, which has meant a revolution as it offers a new, tasty concept for consumers. “The key was to offer a pepper range with different colours and shapes, with the same flavour and presence qualities.” Currently they have Tribelli Mini (30-50 grams) and Tribelli XL (70-90 gr.), and they are working on a variety renewal, with greater adaptation and benefits for farmers and companies, whilst they are boosting the expansion of commercial materials on different markets. “The trend continues to rise due to the great acceptance by European consumers who value this new concept very well.”

In ‘eco’

Vitalis, a subsidiary of Enza, is the only company to offer seeds grown and processed only using biological methods. “It is important for us that the farmers can produce using this system from the very start because the basis of a high yield eco crop is the ecological seed, the first link in the chain.” In addition, with their brand they encourage year-long supply.

On the eco pepper line, they offer California peppers such as Tamarín, Imperio, Deniro, Magno, Sixto… and next campaign, they will have new bio varieties on sale with resistance to powdery mildew.
