Smaller watermelon production

The watermelon campaign begins in Almeria with an important drop in production.
Fruiting problems have led to a decrease in yields throughout the production area. Instead of the usual 60,000 kilos produced per hectare, production has dropped to 40,000 kilos. However, according to declarations made Asaja president Francisco Vargas, “it is still too early to speak about a decrease in overall turnover, since in some cases the crop has been left for a second flowering, which will enable us to add production to the final average, apart from the fact that there are more hectares under cultivation throughout the province, especially outdoors.”
Despite this smaller production, prices are proving to be low in these first few days.
