Fructícola Empordà, Giropoma and Girona Fruits, three of the companies bringing together the main apple growers in the Girona region and members of the Poma de Girona Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), have launched the ‘Devora Pomes’ campaign at the start of the 2026/27 school year. The outreach and communication project is designed to encourage apple consumption among children aged 8 to 12.

The initiative, funded by European funds and expected to run for five years, aims to raise awareness among children and families of the importance of including apples as part of a healthy, balanced diet, through an educational, visual and experience-based approach designed to be both long-lasting and enjoyable.

Learning through play

To engage younger audiences, the campaign adopts a playful approach and introduces the ‘DevoraPomes’, the apple “predators”. Children become ‘DevoraPomes’ themselves and learn their hunting techniques, eating habits and the characteristics of their “prey”: apples.

The project enables children to discover the four apple varieties covered by the Poma de Girona PGI — Gala, Golden, Granny Smith and Red Delicious — learning to distinguish them by their colour, texture, flavour and sound: the characteristic crunch each variety makes when they take a good bite. This narrative helps capture children’s attention and communicate the campaign’s messages naturally through play and experimentation.

The ‘Devora Pomes’ campaign is based on the idea that apples can be much more than an everyday fruit: they can provide a starting point for talking about healthy eating, the primary sector, the local area, sustainability and locally grown produce.

To reinforce the hands-on nature of the project and facilitate activities in the classroom, the three companies behind the initiative will supply apples to participating schools so that pupils can put their role as ‘DevoraPomes’ into practice with real, locally grown produce, tasting and experimenting with the fruit.

How the project will develop

During this first school year, the ‘Devora Pomes’ project will be rolled out through social media (@devorapomes) and the campaign website, which will serve as an information and educational hub providing materials, ideas and content to help teachers and educators carry out activities in the classroom, as well as resources enabling families to explore healthy eating at home.

From the 2027/28 school year, the aim is to build on the initiative and develop new experiences, with plans to expand the activities offered by the project through school visits and workshops at IRTA-Mas Badia, in La Tallada d’Empordà.
