The new developments have been very well received. In its first year, Varane, following the Open Days held last year in Berja and Dalías, will concentrate most of the transplanted farms and this area is where the variety has behaved better in spite of this summer’s extreme temperatures. In the case of Arkane, they are seeing how the crop is growing all over western Spain. “In Nijar there has been an important increase in surface area. They need strong varieties with good calibre and Arkane meets these requirements,” according to Melchor Guzmán, a sales technician from Top Seeds Ibérica.
Both materials follow in the footsteps of their predecessors: strong, with good roots, adapted to heavy soils and with high conductivities. Regarding handling: “the whitening must be controlled (they tend to grow a great deal due to their strength), they are plants that demand water and environmental humidity.”
Throughout this campaign they will carry out seminars to make their new developments known in Eastern and Western Almeria. “With the right handling they are suitable for several different zones and dates.”
And alongside the positive future of the new developments, it is also worth mentioning the commercial ‘boost’ that Arnon and Galiano are experiencing. Many farmers are planting Galiano again after trying other materials with resistance that have caused problems. They are varieties that do not fail. Last year was very good for them; they behaved well. “We are very happy; it has been a pleasure. Galiano is the resistance-free variety that is planted most in the fields.” Regarding Arnon, its earliness and the strength of its roots stand out. “It is for producers who are looking for a fast plant, long-life, safety in the production and G-GG calibre from the beginning.”
In yellow California peppers, they offer Sadoc, with tolerance to powdery mildew and great quality, way above others in colour, endurance and shape.
Top Seeds has the medium cycle covered, but its developments are not stopping there. They are working on other varieties of California, for the same dates and for early and late crops. They also have a Lamuyo that is about to come onto the market. “It will have export size (now demanded by some of the main national retail players), important endurance and quality.”
