Agroseguro reassures producers after wildfires in Ávila and Madrid

Spain’s agricultural insurance scheme has reminded farmers and livestock producers that fire damage is covered under agricultural insurance policies. No claims have been received so far from the affected areas, although the insurer is monitoring the situation closely
INCENDIO-MADRID

Agroseguro has sent a message of reassurance to Spain’s agricultural sector following the latest wildfires in Ávila and Madrid, stressing that agricultural insurance covers possible damage to farming and livestock holdings.

Sources from the agricultural insurance body told Efeagro that, so far, no claims have been received from producers affected by the fires in those areas. However, the organisation has not ruled out the possibility that some horticultural plots may have suffered damage.

Agroseguro is also monitoring the livestock sector, which is particularly present in the affected area of Ávila. At the same time, it noted that the cereal campaign is already “more than finished”.

Fire damage is covered by agricultural insurance

Agroseguro recalled that damage caused by fire to agricultural and livestock production is covered by Spain’s agricultural insurance system.

All insured producers are protected against this risk under the basic guarantee included in any policy. This applies both to damage to production and to plantations, including trees, vineyards and other permanent crops.

The insurance system also covers damage that insured livestock herds may have suffered as a result of the fire.

In the specific case of cereals, the protection also extends to production that may have been affected by the creation of preventive firebreaks when these have been necessary.

No urgency to file claims

Agroseguro stressed that there is no urgency for producers to file a claim immediately. The organisation has recommended following the instructions of the authorities and avoiding any personal risk.

Once the fire has been extinguished and it is safe to access the affected holdings to assess the damage, farmers should contact their insurance intermediary and report the incident to Agroseguro.

The insurer’s regional offices in Castile and León and Castile-La Mancha — the latter also responsible for the Community of Madrid — remain active and in permanent contact with the sector.

Agroseguro reiterated its commitment to coordinating damage assessments and compensation payments as quickly as possible once the fires have been brought under control, allowing affected farmers to carry out the necessary work on their holdings.
