Nogalfruits has added persimmons, kiwis and pomegranates to its range of fruit for overseas destinations
Nogalfruits, a private company from Extremadura focused on marketing, with several farms with its own fruit production, started the campaign with nectarines, peaches and flat peaches. And from the first week in June work was started with plums, a product with which it will reach the 20th of September with the late variety Angeleno. The characteristics of this variety, along with the Smart fresh treatment, allow it be kept in cold storage without the fruit becoming dehydrated, reaching the destinations the company works with, virtually all of which are overseas, in perfect conditions. Since its beginnings in 2007, the decision to concentrate on the most distant markets has been a key element, according to the manager, Justo Redondo. “The European pie had already been divided up; we didn’t want to enter it.” Brazil, the Arab Emirates, Colombia… form the most important destinations they reach. Last year they finished the protocols that open the doors to Canada and China and they are currently certifying farms and working on all the paperwork to operate in South Africa.
Virtually 70% of the total volume marketed by Nogalfruits corresponds to plums. A significant produce on its balance sheet, but to which it has been adding others that are gaining ground in the company’s diversification strategy. The most important is the persimmon, with 1.5 million kilos. The fact that the harvest coincides with the dates for the Valencian production is not a problem for the company, as it exports 80% and uses this produce to complete the offer for its overseas customers. Another of its most recent developments is the kiwi. “We have produce from Plasencia, and this year we have made our first exports with very good results.” To a lesser degree, the company works with Lerida apples and Gala apples from Portugal, and it sends small volumes of Rocha pears to Ecuador, where they are “the only Spaniards” to arrive with this produce.
And they aren’t stopping here. From this campaign onwards they are incorporating a new reference to their range: the pomegranate and they are about to start carrying out trials with avocados imported from Morocco.
