The Beefsteak tomato segment plays an important role in its offer, in which it has references such as green-necked Anairis and Calabardina
Bayer’s vegetable division, with its brands Seminis and Deruiter, continues working to offer its clients the best variety offer for the spring tomato crops, particularly in the Beefsteak tomato segment.
The sowing of tomatoes for spring/summer will begin in a few months in the Zafarraya area (Granada), where the variety Anairis is the reference in green-necked beefsteak tomato, which has been successful for the past ten years. Added to this is the consolidation of the variety Calabardina, as a complement in the red Beefsteak tomato segment, “increasingly in demand by the supermarket chains for the summer cycle, where consumption has risen in recent years on the Spanish market,” according to José Luis Pérez, Sales Area Manager North, South West, Extremadura & the Canaries.
Accordingly, also in the Western Area of Andalusia, specifically in Seville and Conil de la Frontera, the tomato sowing is already underway, with the beefsteak SVTH1214 and Eterei standing out for their significant production potential, their homogenous size and their great quality. SVTH2900 has been added to these varieties as a new development for this market, with even greater production and improved quality of the fruit with an exceptional closing of the pistil area, in addition to a better package of resistances.
If we move to the northern areas of the Valle del Ebro, Aragon and the Basque Country, the undisputable tomato leader is the historic Jack, due to its great flavour and its fleshy texture, characteristics that have turned it into a very popular material with consumers in this region.
In vine tomato, Laujar continues to be the reference in this segment for spring and extra-early short cycle crops. At Seminis they affirm that Laujar is highly recommended for ecological crops due to its notable package of resistances. “The uniformity of the vine and its red colour make it the favourite for farmers,” José Luis Pérez indicates.
