Valeriano*, a new melon for La Mancha

Clause has extended its portfolio and is developing new varieties for Murcia

In this campaign, HM.Clause is disembarking in Castilla-La Mancha with an important launch for the middle cycle that completes the piel de sapo range in the area. The variety, called Valeriano (CLX MPN07), is added to Valdivieso and Valeoso, offering producers a highly plastic (adapting to all soil types, with both high clay or sand content, ideal for poor and over-used soils) and productive material (it has the same yield in different areas of the region). The seed company recommends transplanting from mid-may until the end of June and it indicates, amongst its characteristics, the hardiness of the plants, with a good root system and a good resistance level, mainly IR to powdery mildew and aphids. The fruits, uniform and with an attractive lengthwise grooving, range between 3.5 and 3.8 kilos, and their aroma and flavour are those of most traditional melons.

In Murcia, they have the references Valverde F1, and Valdivieso F1, followed by Valiente F1, another flagship in the area, and Valderas F1. But Clause has not stopped there and currently it is carrying out large-scale testing on three new varieties for the area: CLX MPO21, a promising piel de sapo for early harvesting; a semi-long life Galia for medium and late planting, CLX MGP22; and a yellow melon for April planting, CLX MCE399.

Alongside Clause’s melon portfolio, the good results produced by its first watermelon variety, Casilda F1, are worth mentioning. A material that is “highly plastic that can be grown first in Almeria and then in Murcia and Castilla-La Mancha.” A black triploid, it has a large calibre(6-8 kg),good flavour and a deep colour, in addition to a very high setting rate and good quality and post-harvest for the fruit, which remains in perfect organoleptic conditions for 14 days.
