Global Plant Genetics and Fox Seeds sign deal for European asparagus seed distribution

Fox Seeds, the worldwide producer and distributor of asparagus varieties developed by the breeding program at the University of Guelph in Canada, and UK based Global Plant Genetics have signed a deal for the exclusive European distribution rights for their varieties.

The University of Guelph asparagus breeding program is world renowned for its high yielding and excellent quality varieties. Guelph Millennium has been the most popular hybrid to date but the program is also launching three new cultivars:

  • Guelph Eclipse
  • Guelph Evolution
  • Guelph Equinox

Seed production of these varieties is being expanded to meet demand by asparagus growers in temperate regions around the world.

Commenting on the new agreement, Jamie Petchell of Global Plant Genetics stated, “This is very exciting news for us as we develop a well-rounded asparagus portfolio. The breeding program at the University of Guelph and the seed production at Fox Seeds are world renowned for their professionalism and delivery of excellent asparagus hybrids. We are eager to further the development of the program through increased seed distribution across Europe, working with as wide as possible range of nurseries and growers.”

Bernt (Bernie) Solymár, Executive Director of Fox Seeds, remarked, “We see this as a new dawn in our asparagus development in Europe. We are excited to have reached this agreement with Global Plant Genetics and to have “boots on the ground” in Europe. We look forward to working closely with them to develop seed sales over the European Continent. Asparagus is a long term investment for growers, and we were looking for a partner with sufficient technical skills to ensure that both nurseries and growers make the most of our hybrids. GPG provides that for us.”
