Syngenta’s California pepper portfolio enters the season with Spartanos as its leading reference among the varieties currently available to the sector in the late-cycle segment. Launched last year, the variety has generated strong interest among growers to the point that, according to Alejandro Pascual, the company’s pepper specialist, “everyone, even those who have not seen it, wants to plant Spartanos”.
Its appeal lies in a combination of productivity, crop adaptation and fruit quality. Spartanos has the ability to regenerate throughout the cycle, which can provide an additional yield boost depending on weather conditions. It also has a strong root system, enabling it to adapt to planting dates from 20–25 July through to mid-August.
The variety maintains the consistency required of a late-cycle material and offers a size profile focused on GG, with a presence of G fruit. This combination of large fruit, thick walls and firmness strengthens its production potential.

Alongside Spartanos, Syngenta maintains a consolidated late-cycle portfolio. Saitama continues to be one of the segment’s benchmark varieties, while Masami provides G-double G calibre, high productivity and strong regrowth capacity. Leontes, with a more open plant structure, is gaining interest in a context where the detection of Thrips parvispinus is a growing concern in the field. Hokkaido completes the offer for mid-late plantings.
The portfolio is also supported by a resistance package that, in practically all varieties, includes TM3, spotted, powdery mildew and nematodes.
Cintra, the yellow pepper commitment
Among the new developments, Pascual highlights Cintra, a late-cycle yellow variety that will become commercially available in the 2027 season. The material combines firmness, productivity and calibre, together with a complete resistance package. Syngenta positions it as a yellow alternative close to its strongest red references.
