Vilmorin-Mikado is a benchmark in the yellow California pepper segment in Almería, and its portfolio for this campaign confirms it. The introduction of Turing, this year’s new variety, completes an offer that now covers early, mid and mid-late cycles, with plantings ranging from May to late July, as explained by Isabel Rodríguez, Solanaceae Development Manager for Iberia at the company.
Turing is the major new addition in yellow peppers. Developed for early cycles, it enters production quickly and stands out for its high productivity and its attractive lemon-yellow colour.
The variety joins materials such as Faraday, designed for mid cycles with transplanting dates from 1 to 15 July. This material offers highly uniform fruits with G–GG calibre, ideal for cooperatives.
Another key variety in the range is Arquímedes, aimed at the second half of July, also with G–GG calibre and very good quality at the end of the cycle. Both incorporate resistances to powdery mildew, nematodes, spotted and L4.

However, the variety that best represents the company’s commercial strength in this segment is Eglantine. Despite being on the market for nine years, it remains one of the best-selling yellow California peppers thanks to a combination of quality and yield that, according to Rodríguez, continues to perform above average.
The company continues to work on new materials to complete and strengthen all cycles in Almería.
Red segment also advancing
In the red California segment, Vilmorin-Mikado is also reinforcing its early segment with Numenor, the new variety for this campaign. Highly adaptable, it is showing outstanding performance in areas such as Berja, Adra and El Ejido.
Easy to manage, it sets fruit well even under blanching conditions, making it “particularly useful at the start of the campaign, to cope with pest pressure when temperatures are higher, and from the outset it delivers good calibre, unlike other varieties that often present difficulties”.
Meanwhile, Nazgul, now in its second commercial year, is designed for plantings from 1 to 15 July and stands out for its uniformity, calibre, intense red colour and square-shaped fruits without a pointed tip, qualities highly valued by cooperatives.
