This award strengthens the commitment by Peras de Rincón de Soto to obtain maximum quality in each pear
The pears from the DO Peras de Rincón de Soto are grown in 27 municipalities around La Rioja, and these towns form the Production Zone, which at the same time is the area where they are stored and packaged, ready for selling.
The specific characteristics of these pears are the result of the soil in which they are grown, on the terraces of the Ebro, Cidacos, Alhama, Iregua and Najerilla rivers, in flat areas, with good ventilation, deep valleys, damp, permeable and healthy, without any lime or silicon. Early morning fog is frequent, which favours the appearance of russeting or the rusting of the skin, which is highly appreciated in this fruit.
Currently, the DO covers a surface area of 1,232 ha, mostly divided up into small farms. 234 farmers, men and women, who look after the over 1,750,000 trees from which they obtain the pears included in this Denomination of Origin.
Cultivation and harvesting
They cultivate and harvest the fruit, combining traditional methods with innovative and technological techniques.
The pear trees are not watered while they are in bloom, or just before harvesting, as this could cause alterations in the quality. The thinning and pruning is carried out by hand. Therefore, there is a correct ratio of fruit on the trees, increasing their size and sweetness without affecting the structure and balance of the fruit.
The harvest is also carried out by hand. It does not start until the size of the fruit, the colour, how easily they can be removed from the stalk and the consistency of the flesh has been checked. Only pears without spots or deformations that reach the minimum size marked out by the Denomination’s regulation are harvested.
Packaging
The pears of this Denomination are packaged one by one, by hand, and only in the packages admitted by the Regulating Board, always conserving all their nutritional and organoleptic qualities.
How to identify them
The Peras de Rincón de Soto are marketed in packages with numbered labels including the Peras de Rincon de Soto badge. Additionally, each pear has a label with the logotype that is exclusively used for the pears of this DO.
The Pears from the Denomination of Origin Rincón de Soto have a juicy, mild flesh, which melts in the mouth and they are very sweet when they reach perfect ripeness.
