With the sights set on Rociera

After the successes obtained by varieties such as Primoris and Rábida, Fresas Nuevos Materiales is promoting the Rociera variety

The company is concentrating all its efforts on promoting the Rociera variety, a strawberry that is characterised for maintaining its flavour and sweetness until the end of the cycle and with an unbeatable shelf life that allows it to compete with European seasonal fruit. Its size throughout the entire production phase is also worth mentioning.

Rociera has made important inroads in Huelva, going from 1 million plants in the 2015-16 season to around 55 million now.

From the agronomical point of view, Rociera is a strong plant, with long stems that make harvesting easier and an open architecture that encourages greater aeration, meaning that fewer plant protection applications are required.

According to data provided by the IFAPA (Agricultural and Fishing Training Institute of Andalusia), the company Fresas Nuevos Materiales, created in the 1990s with the aim of preventing dependence on foreign companies for plant material, now holds 36.1% of the market share.

This company arose as an initiative by the farmers from Huelva themselves in their desire to search for their own varieties. Today, over 1,200 members take part, including nurseries and fruit producers and many of the most representative companies in the sector are members.

Of its three most commercial varieties on Huelva soil, in first place Primoris stands out with 16.2% of market share, followed by Rábida and Rociera, with 9.9 % and 10% respectively.

Enrique Tello, head of the sales department, states that “FNM’s variety catalogue stands out for being very complete, but above all for its excellent organoleptic quality and shelf life, which guarantees that the producer can expect stable, profitable marketing until the end of the campaign.”
