Organised by ProFresas, the event brought together more than 350 growers, nurseries, researchers and other industry professionals to discuss the future of strawberry production in Peru and across South America.
GPG used the congress to showcase the strawberry genetics developed by the University of California, Davis. As International Master Licence Holder for all patented UC Davis strawberry genetics, the company supports the introduction, commercialisation and protection of these varieties in different markets, including Peru.
A broad portfolio of UC Davis varieties
Visitors to the GPG stand were able to meet Jamie Petchell, GPG Co-owner, and Jorge M. Nanjari Z., Strawberry Business Development Manager – South America, and learn more about a broad portfolio of UC Davis varieties.
These included UCD Royal Royce, UCD Moxie, UCD Valiant, UCD Victor and UCD Warrior, as well as UC Eclipse, UC Golden Gate, UC Keystone, UC Monarch and UC Surfline.
The participation also included a presentation by Nanjari to more than 300 delegates, in which he shared GPG’s perspective on strawberry genetics and the development opportunities for the Peruvian industry.
Trials and meetings with the Peruvian sector
Nanjari’s visit also included tours of UC Davis variety trials in Trujillo, Chavimochic and Virú, together with meetings with growers and nurseries.
“Peru has an ambitious and highly engaged strawberry industry. The trials, meetings and Congress demonstrated the considerable opportunity for improved genetics to support its continued development,” he said.
For his part, Petchell highlighted the response from the sector during the event.
“It was a privilege for GPG to support this important inaugural event as a Platinum Sponsor. The level of engagement highlighted both the strength of the industry and its potential for further growth,” he said.
Genetics and international collaboration
GPG sees innovative genetics, technical knowledge and international collaboration as key elements in supporting the future development of strawberry production in Peru.
