Asparagus seed supplier, Global Plant Genetics, has recently reported continuing excellent results from its new range of green asparagus hybrids.
The company made initial launches of the cultivars Guelph Eclipse & Guelph Equinox in the past two years. Seed volumes of both are now being ramped up as growers’ requirements increase.
The first commercial scale plantations are now being harvested across Europe. The varieties come from the same stable as the well-renowned Guelph Millenium. This variety has been long established as a high-yielding, excellent quality type for harvest later in the European season. The key point of difference from Guelph Eclipse and Guelph Equinox is that their harvest season starts much earlier. Trials data shows that both of these new asparagus hybrids are among the very earliest green types to crop in Northern European conditions. As a consequence of this, total marketable yields have been increased to new levels for green asparagus.
Jamie Petchell, asparagus specialist at Global Plant Genetics states “We have repeatedly seen both Guelph Eclipse & Guelph Equinox delivering new standards in terms of yield, quality and seasonality. The 2019 season is no different. Increased yields per asparagus plant will help to drive efficiencies within major asparagus businesses across Europe. We very much see these varieties driving a new green revolution in asparagus production and marketing.”
Last autumn, Global Plant Genetics launched a new asparagus centric website – www.asparagusseeds.com – in order to keep enthusiasts of the crop updated with the latest in variety and seeds.
